pam kept looking up at the waiter, willing him to bring her food. with her eyes, she silently begged, but he didn't look up from taking the order of other table. she had no idea what to do with her hands right now... first she wrung them, then tapped her fingers, then she took the napkin and slowly began ripping it to pieces. the last thing she wanted to do was look up at james. he had been sitting so uncomfortably still, quietly, watching her. she was amazed at how a few simple words could descend a thick cloud of discomfort on the entire restaurant. it seemed everyone had falled silent, as if they were waiting for her response.

finally she looked up. "are you serious?" was all she could manage. his face seemed confused, crushed, he opened his mouth to say something and suddenly the waiter descended upon them, cradling plates of food. the restaurant seemed to lively up, chatter being reinstated as if by magic. for a few seconds, pam stared at james across the table as the waiter placed salads and pastas between them. he stood next to the table, he was saying something, he walked away, and pam and james never broke eye contact. she studied him as he watched her- his eyes were large and brown, nervous, frozen
